Pakistan Information Commission issued Bi-Annual Report
Pakistan Information Commission is an independent and autonomous enforcement body, established under Section 18 of the Right of Access to Information Act 2017 to ensure implementation of this Act. Its role is to establish mechanisms so that citizens of Pakistan can exercise their constitutional right of access to information in matters of public importance. In this connection, it takes steps for public awareness of the law, helps federal public bodies comply with the law, trains public information officers, monitors their performance, decides complaints and takes action against those failing to comply with the provisions of the Right of Access to Information Act 2017.
The Pakistan Information Commission (PIC) comprises of three Commissioners who are appointed by Prime Minister for a term of 4 years. The Commission is headed by Chief information Commissioner who is appointed by Prime Minister from amongst the Commissioners. At present, Mr. Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui is Chief Information Commissioner; whereas Mr. Ijaz Hassan Awan and Mr. Huzaifa Rehman are Information Commissioners.
According to Bi-Annual Report complied u/s 19(2)(c) of Right of Access to Information Act 2017 in the year 2023 w.e.f 1st January 2023 to 30th June 2023, 492 appeals were received by the Commission out of which 239 appeals were resolved and 253 appeals are pending. According to report, the Commission has received total 3317 appeals since 2018 out of which 381 appeals were received through Online Appeal Management (OAM) System and 2936 appeals were received via post.
The Commission is performing its function as per law and it is really a blessing for Public at Large who desire to procure any public information. The access to public information is key to good governance.
